It seems United are already planning for life without Wan-Bissaka. According to the Daily Mail, who cite Italian outlet Calciomercato, they want to bring in Dumfries so he can compete with Dalot at right-back.

Dumfries impressed with PSV last season, and while representing Holland at the European Championships. That saw him join Inter in August 2021, where he became Achraf Hakimi’s replacement.

Dumfries had a great debut campaign at Inter, notching five goals and seven assists in 45 outings. But he could spend just one year with the Italian club as United apparently hope to land him.

It will not be easy, as Bayern Munich also like the look of the Dutchman and may swoop in. But Inter’s stance makes a transfer achievable.

Inter are ‘open to selling’ Dumfries to improve their finances. Such an exit would also boost their chances of keeping centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, who is a target for Tottenham, as they wouldn’t have to sell him.

Inter should get a decent sum for Dumfries too. His contract at the San Siro runs until 2025, which means they can command a premium fee.

Dumfries would certainly be a good addition to the United squad. He has proven his ability to perform at a high level, with both Inter and Holland.

The wing-back also has Champions League experience, having made seven outings in the competition during 2021-22. This could help United as they aim to win next season’s Europa League to get back in the UCL.

But the transfer seems to be reliant on Wan-Bissaka going first, and that is a stumbling block. No club will want to pay anywhere near the £50m he cost United in 2019.

And with the Manchester outfit not wanting to take a big hit, it may be a few months before we see a right-back revolution occur.
