Manchester United feel confident that they will soon get a deal over the line for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, according to a report.
The Red Devils are chasing the Dutchman as they look to reunite him with Erik ten Hag. The pair worked together successfully at Ajax, subsequently leading to Barca sealing De Jong’s big-money transfer in 2019.
Since then, though, De Jong has struggled to hit the heights at Camp Nou. And amid Barca’s financial troubles looming large, he is therefore facing something of a crossroads now that the Ten Hag opportunity has come up.
Reports on Monday claimed that Man Utd are willing to make De Jong their highest-paid player.
And despite not submitting a bid for the 25-year-old yet, Sport now claims that United are ‘sure’ that they can agree a fee with Barcelona and terms with De Jong.
They have an ‘idea’ of the final fee, which they think will amount to around €75million (£64million). De Jong, who is now on international duty with the Netherlands for their Nations League fixtures, has spoken out on his future.

He told ESPN: “I prefer to stay with Barcelona. Barcelona is just my dream club. Also from a young age.
“I just said it too. I’ve never regretted my choice despite the fact that I had hoped for more in terms of prizes than I’ve achieved so far. But I have never regretted my choice.”
In another interview with ADSportwereld, he added: “Of course I hear about the links to Manchester United. But the people in charge of the club didn’t tell me anything.
“So then I will assume that there is no agreement, and that nothing is going on. So then I won’t worry about it too.”
Sport adds in its report that it is ‘Manchester United or nothing’ for De Jong. Indeed, no other club is willing to stump up the money needed to sign him this summer.
Despite De Jong’s comments, United and Barca internally feel that a move to Old Trafford for the midfielder would be ‘profitable’ for ‘everyone’.
