A pundit has told Manchester United to axe a surprise name in midfield and replace him with Chelsea’s World Cup-winning star N’Golo Kante.

The hard-working midfielder hasn’t had the best of seasons and has been kept on the sidelines by multiple injuries. However, he still remains one of the highest rated players in his position in the world.

Kante, 31, has helped both Leicester and Chelsea to win the Premier League title. He also made 13 appearances in the Champions League last season as Chelsea won the competition for the second time in their history.

The Guardian claim Manchester United want to bring Kante to Old Trafford once the summer transfer window gets underway.

Not only would this boost Erik ten Hag’s options, it would also weaken a huge Premier League rival.

More recently, The Athletic have claimed Kante will be available for a reduced price. This is due to his contract winding down and the fact Thomas Tuchel wants new midfielders at Stamford Bridge.

Pundit Frank McAvennie thinks Kante would be ‘one hell of an upgrade’ on Scott McTominay. That’s despite the Scot emerging into one of United’s most important players.

“Kante? Oh my god, he would be the best midfielder there,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He walks into that team. There are no two ways about that. It would be a big-money move even though he only has a year left at Chelsea.

“That then frees up someone like McTominay to leave the club. I’ll say it again, I like Scott but he is not good enough for Man United.

“So you swap Scott for Kante, that’s one hell of an upgrade to me. It’s whether Chelsea will let him go.

McAvennie’s stance on McTominay is a surprising one. The 25-year-old came through United’s academy and is now a first-team regular.

Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick have relied on him in recent seasons. And while McTominay’s performances haven’t been the best this campaign, he is one of the players United need to keep if they want to get back to the top.
