Manchester United are assessing a possible return for Rene Meulensteen to assist Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman was assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson from 2007 to 2013, leaving when Ferguson retired from management.

Ten Hag is set to take over at United in the summer, beating out Mauricio Pochettino to the Old Trafford job.

Other reports have suggested that former England boss Steve McClaren may be his no.2.

However, ESPN states that Meulensteen is a likely figure for that position.

Both McClaren and Meulensteen have history at United as assistants, with McClaren having that job between 1999 and 2001.
