Wolves are reportedly resigned to losing Manchester United-linked Ruben Neves this summer if a suitable offer comes in.
The midfielder has been repeatedly linked with a move to Old Trafford. United are keen to bolster their options in the centre of the park with Paul Pogba set to leave at the end of the season. However, it may not be an easy pursuit of the 25-year-old.
Neves has expressed a desire to play Champions League football, and Wolves would likely only allow him to leave for a top-four side. United were dealt a blow in their quest for Champions League qualification following a 1-1 draw with Leicester on Saturday.
The club are now seventh, only three points away from fourth-placed Tottenham, but have played one game more than Arsenal, who are only fifth on goal difference. Add in the fact a report from The Athletic, which reveals these latest Neves developments, says Barcelona are frontrunners for the Portugal international and the picture looks bleak.
Interest from United supporters piqued when the Portuguese played a starring role in Wolves’ win over the Reds at Old Trafford back in January. Neves went on to score the only goal in the game as the visitors dealt a major blow to United’s hopes of finishing fourth.
Wolves manager Bruno Lage has admitted it will be difficult for his side to keep hold of Ruben Neves this summer.
“From my side he knows my opinion,” Lage said. “I want the best for his career. If he prefers to remain with us (at Wolves), I will for sure be happy and stronger but this is football.
“When you see the level he is playing at. A big team comes with a better offer. We need to analyse what is better for us and the player.
“Ruben is doing a fantastic job at Wolves. It’s hard to find a player like him. A guy who can attack and defend. Normally you have guys who just attack or defend. He can do both. He can score goals and he can assist.”
Neves is under contract with Wolves until 2024, but will no doubt face more speculation over his future as the summer transfer window approaches. With United looking to strengthen their midfield, he could be an option to make the move to Old Trafford.
