Manchester United could sign midfielder target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic from Lazio for a discount of up to £8.5million, according to a report.
The Red Devils are facing a pivotal few months on a number of fronts. First of all, there is the identity of the new manager to sort out. Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are the leading contenders, but a final decision is unclear.
Whoever comes in will potentially face the task of getting Man Utd back into the Champions League if they fail to secure a top-four Premier League finish this term.
And even if they do make the top four, the new manager must manage a number of outgoings and the need for new signings.
Previous reports have claimed that Serbia international Milinkovic-Savic is a firm target for a new midfield addition.
Paris Saint-Germain are also in the hunt and both teams face paying a significant fee for the 27-year-old.
According to Italian transfer journalist Alfredo Pedulla, though, Lazio president Claudio Lotito is willing to give interested clubs a deal discount.
While Lotito’s original fee was €70million (£59million), Lazio could let him leave for €60million (£51million) by knocking as much as €10million off the fee.
Milinkovic-Savic has just over two years left on his contract. Lazio therefore want to make a decision over his future this summer to get the best price if he does want to leave and to avoid losing him for free thereafter.
And the midfielder does indeed feel that he has reached ‘the end of a cycle’ at Lazio, and wants a switch.
Milinkovic-Savic has been at Lazio since 2015 and has made 286 appearances.
