Jadon Sancho can become a “superstar” at Manchester United because the winger has all the traits in his locker, according to Lee Sharpe.

The 21-year-old has not had the immediate impact some had predicted. Following 16 goals and 20 assists in his final season in the Bundesliga, Sancho has only managed five strikes and three assists this term.

Nevertheless, some of those have proved crucial. The England international secured a point for Man Utd away at Chelsea in November and netted in a 2-0 win at Villarreal to help his side into the Champions League knockout stages.

Sancho is also in a strong vein of Premier League form. He has scored twice and assisted three others in the past six games.

And former United defender Sharpe insisted that Sancho’s initial slow start at Man Utd was down to the effects of Euro 2020.

“I like Jadon Sancho,” Sharpe told The Athletic.

“He struggled when he got to Old Trafford, but players do struggle after international tournaments.

“It’s not just the physical load, and Sancho wasn’t playing all the time [at the Euros] for England, it’s the mental side.

“Harry Maguire, Harry Kane, Luke Shaw… these players have struggled [this season]. I think it’s because they didn’t have a proper break, they get mentally fatigued as well as physically and reaching the final meant emotional disappointment.”

Sharpe insisted that Sancho has the ability to become a “superstar” at Old Trafford.

“Sancho had a couple of little injuries at the start [with United] and he got over them. There’s no question of his ability,” the 50-year-old said.

“He can go past people for fun; he’s got a clever footballing brain in that he makes the right decisions at the right time. He can see a pass, chooses the right pass, he plays at pace, he doesn’t just swing a cross in.

“I think he will be a superstar at United.”

Sancho is only in his debut season at Man Utd and has plenty of time left to hit top form.

The change in manager at Old Trafford from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Ralf Rangnick has in fact helped improve his form.

And while Rangnick is highly unlikely to stay in the dugout next season, the winger will be hoping the next coach in can have a similar impact.
