Manchester United came away from the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium with a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Wednesday night against Atletico Madrid.
The Red Devils, who were in Champions League action, knew that loss against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid will make their odds of reaching the competition’s next round very tough.
However, despite putting in a poor performance overall, United was able to pull a late equaliser back thanks to a cool finish from Anthony Elanga.
Although Elanga will steal the headlines following what was a moment of sheer splendor that came against the run-of-play, midfielder Bruno Fernandes also played a crucial role in making the goal happen.
Picking up the ball in the centre of the park, the Portuguese playmaker played an excellent through-ball quickly into Elanga’s path, setting him up expertly.
In fact, so important was Fernandes’ contribution that the midfielder’s latest assist has seen him break a long-standing European record previously held by club legend David Beckham.
According to stat site OptaJoe, Fernandes’ assist on Wednesday night sees him become the first player to play for an English club to make at least one assist in six consecutive games – a record previously held by Beckham, dating as far back as 1998.
