Manchester United should avoid making moves to sign either Ruben Neves or Youri Tielemans this summer, according to Rio Ferdinand.

Ralf Rangnick has identified United’s midfield as an area of weakness and appears certain to strengthen their this summer. While the German looks unlikely to be in the dugout next season, Rangnick will move into a consultancy role.

And he has a proven track record of getting it right in the market from his previous director of football roles.

The Red Devils hierarchy, who have been hit and miss with transfers, will do well to heed his advice. But they have already began clashing, it seems with a reported disagreement over a potential move for Christopher Nkunku.

Two other options open to United, it seems, are Tielemans and Neves.

Belgium star Tielemans will be out of contract at Leicester in summer 2023. As such, reports are growing that the Foxes will look to cash in over the summer. To that end, a report has suggested he could depart for a discounted fee.

Neves is another midfielder to be linked with United. His performances for Wolves have not gone unnoticed with Arsenal also reportedly among his admirers.

He too, however, would likely cost a significant fee with Wolves boss Bruno Lage standing firm on his price.

However, when asked if United should sign either, Ferdinand offered a dim view.

When asked about Man Utd potentially signing Neves, Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel: “I like him, he’s fantastic, he keeps the ball as well as anyone. Neves is a really good footballer.”

When put to him that the midfield at Old Trafford next season should be Neves, Tielemans and Bruno Fernandes, Ferdinand replied: “That wouldn’t be my choice, I’ve got to be honest.

“I like them, good players. But if you think that midfield is getting you any closer to the other teams I’d argue against it. Mobility-wise we’d be lacking.”
