Manchester United claimed a vital point away to Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening thanks to two magnificent goals from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Our first-ever visit to Bergamo looked set to be a disappointing one for Solskjaer’s Reds but Ronaldo once again showed his world-class ability in both first-half and second-half stoppage time as his two strikes salvaged a crucial draw in Group F.
Before the late drama, Slovenian forward Josip Ilicic put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute, against the run of play as United started on the front foot.
The Reds got an equaliser on the stroke of half-time as Ronaldo finished off a lovely move for his 126th United goal, the same tally that our manager has for the club.
Duvan Zapata ran in behind in the 55th-minute before sending La Dea ahead from close range. The goal was assessed for offside by VAR but was given after a lengthy check.
As the game reached its final stages it looked like it was a lost affair, but a game is never over until it’s over, certainly when Ronaldo’s on the pitch. And our no.7, aka Mr Champions League, stepped up to volley a stupendous strike into the bottom corner to make it 2-2.
The point means United remain top of the group, level on points with Villarreal.
RATINGS

David De Gea: Should have done better with Atalanta’s opening strike, letting Ilicic’s strike go under his body. Did make a smart stop to deny Zapata late on but let the Red Devils down again. 5/10

Eric Bailly: Brilliant block to deny Zapata after Pogba gave away possession in the area. United’s best defender on the night. 7

Raphael Varane: Forced off with an injury just before the break but was struggling with Zapata’s pace and power before it. 5

Harry Maguire: Was caught out playing a high line as Zapata escaped to restore Atalanta’s lead in the second half. Had an uncomfortable night against the powerhouse striker. 5

Aaron Wan-Bisska: Was unable to make the barnstorming runs he did at Spurs as United were forced into a formation change after Varane’s injury. 6

Bruno Fernandes: Brilliant flick to tee-up Ronaldo for United’s equaliser but didn’t have his normal impact on the game. Still surprisingly taken off late on. 6

Scott McTominay: Had his work cut out in the first half with Pogba alongside him instead of Fred. Booked and subbed late on. 6

Paul Pogba: Poor giveaway in his own area almost cost United a second goal in the first half. Workrate questioned again in a midfield two and hauled off on 69 minutes. 5

Luke Shaw: Always an outlet down the left but final ball often let him down. 6

Marcus Rashford: Looked dangerous early on but faded out of the game. Taken off with just over 20 minutes to go. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo: Finished off a brilliant United move just before the break to draw them level and produced a superb volley to rescue a point in stoppage-time. Just sheer class. 9

Substitutes:

Mason Greenwood (on for Varane, 39): Failed to stamp his authority on a game where United’s attack struggled. 5

Nemanja Matic (on for Pogba, 69): Neat and tidy as always but made little impact. 5

Edinson Cavani (on for Rashford, 69): Put himself about as United showed a bit more urgency in the search for an equaliser. 6

Jadon Sancho (on for McTominay, 87): N/A

Donny van de Beek (on for Fernandes, 87): N/A
