Newcastle have made formal contact with Manchester United and Anthony Martial’s representative over signing the striker, a report claims.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed one standout season for the Red Devils, but struggled to convince either side of that. Indeed, his record of 23 goals and 12 assists in 2019/20 remains his best campaign.
Martial’s future has subsequently faced speculation for some time, but those exit links have increased after the recent transfer window.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho have bolstered manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ranks. As such, United reportedly feel willing to lose Martial for around £40million in January.
Tottenham have had some of the strongest links with a move. According to Stretty News, though, Newcastle have now put themselves in the transfer hunt following their takeover.
Furthermore, the recruitment team at St James’ Park have supposedly contacted United and Martial’s agent.
The signing would prove a statement one to allow the player to get his career in England back on track.
While he did net his first goal in eight months before the international break, he is currently one of a number of options up top for United.
By moving to Newcastle, he has the potential to become the main man for whoever takes over from Steve Bruce.
Still, reports emerge that a number Spanish clubs have flung the race for Martial wide open by showing interest. The report, though, does not name which sides from Spain have joined the hunt.
But what is clear is that United want to recoup as much of the fee they paid for their striker as possible, with the deal starting costing an initial £36million.
