Manchester United midfield prospect James Garner has thrown his future into doubt by turning down a new contract, according to reports.
The 20-year-old academy product has risen through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and gained transfer interest. Following a loan move at Watford in the first half of last season, he moved to Nottingham Forest. Both stints served him well, the Englishman raking up 40 Championship appearances.
Since returning to United, Garner has also played a key role in pre-season. He has featured in four matches.
Garner has only one year left on his current deal. Past reports have contended that United want to hand him a new contract before sending him back out on loan.
His exit would come as a blow to the Red Devils, who believe he is capable of stepping up to the first team.
United do reportedly have the option to extend his deal by a further year until 2023. However, they would rather resolve his long-term future by tying him down to a new contract.
Sheffield United, Forest and Stoke have registered interest in signing the Academy product permanently, but It remains unclear whether United are willing to sell at this stage, with negotiations still ongoing.
