Manchester United are approaching a breakthrough in their pursuit of Raphael Varane after serious talks with Real Madrid started today according to Fabrizio Romano.
Varane is United’s new priority goal after they finished off the signing of main target Jadon Sancho. With their wide areas adequately bolstered, they have now turned their focus to the rear guard. Their top defensive target is Varane, who has been on their radar for years. Now, they have a serious chance of obtaining their man.
With his contract in Madrid reaching its final year, Varane’s condition points to a transfer. He originally wanted to stay at the club following Sergio Ramos’ exit but has not been happy with their offer of a new deal. Therefore, he has reassessed his options and is now keen to join United.
Transfer Guru, Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal may be wrapped up this week in what will be a stellar performance for United in the transfer market. He said on his official Twitter account;
“Official bid from Man Utd for Raphaël Varane to be submitted in the next few days – Utd board ‘confident’, deal getting closer.”
“Varane has an almost ready agreement on personal terms – he’s NOT extending with Real, he wants a new challenge. No other clubs in the race.”
There had thus been fears that United and Madrid would fail to find an agreement. But now, there is fresh positiveness from a Red Devils viewpoint.
Madrid wants to hold out for a fee of €70m but sources predict a deal to be done between €45m and €55m.
The two clubs are said to have a “very good” relationship, despite earlier reports implying differently. Therefore, they are inclined to find a middle ground.
Varane still respects Real and will not force his way out, but is enticed by the project at United to leave if the opportunity arises.
If he moves to Manchester, Varane will be deployed alongside Harry Maguire as one of United’s first-choice centre-backs. A World Cup winner with France in 2018 and three times a La Liga titlist with Real, he would bring plenty of experience to the Old Trafford backline.
Still only 28, United believe he is still worth investing in and they may be getting closer to a breakthrough.
